This was a tough book to read, but it was also very compelling. The book follows four slave women over the course of several summers a few years pre-Civil War. I thought the book provided an important perspective on slaves who by the standard of the day were treated well, but had to handle very serious and complex problems, especially as it related to their children (many of whom were fathered by the slave owner). The complicated families that followed were interesting, tragic, and also triumphant. I would definitely recommend this book.
