Between Two Queens (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #2)
by Kate Emerson
by Kate Emerson
I would give this 3.5 stars, if I could...
The second book in Kate Emersons "Secrets of the Tudor Court" series, Between Two Queens focus's on the life of Anne (Nan) Basset, a minor noblewoman who served in the households of several Tudor Queens.
The book opens with Nan and her sister, Cat, competing for a place as Lady in Waiting to Queen Jane Seymore. Nan catches the eye of King Henry and is chosen over her sister.
She's thrilled by the attention from Henry, and is attracted to him from that moment on.
We follow her life as she moves from household to household - first serving Jane, then Anna of Cleves, then Katherine Howard, Mary Tudor, Kathryn Parr and finally Queen Mary before she finally marries and leaves court (the end of the book.)
During this time she and Henry VIII circle each other - their lives overlapping here and there, their attraction for each other waxing and waning. Nan seems to be a candidate for queen between Jane and Anna, and again between Anna and Catherine, and once more between Catherine and Kathryn.
This one moved slowly, but WAS interesting. I especially enjoyed the excerpts from letters at the beginning of each chapter. I loved knowing where Emerson drew her information from, and seeing how she extrapolated those bits of information out to become this story.
Definitely not a favorite, but no waste of time, either :)
