I'm not going to review every Dirk Pitt adventure I read in the summer of '96 (you'll have to listen to Bryan Adam's song to hear a complete list), but Dragon stands out for a number of reasons:

1) Cussler finally figured out the cold war was over, so instead of fighting Ruskies, Dirk Pitt squared off against the Japs.

2) Instead of thwarting one big nuclear attack, there were lots of little suit-cased sized bombs to stop, so the book had a bit more of a modern, small terror-state feel.

3) Ninjas! (because he's fighting the japs). There's this one scene where Pitt et al are in a jeep fleeing a van full of ninjas, and they decide to crash through the front display window of a hard-ware store, where they then hold the ninjas off with shot-guns and flaming cans of paint. The single most kick-ass scene ever.
