Stephen Huneck's are a delight to read for children, as well as adults. His sense of humor shines through his illustrations and dry wit which will keep adults engaged. The large, bright illustrations are enjoyable for old and young. This book would be good for preschoolers as a Story Time book, as well as a read aloud lap book. The sparse amount of text would be good for beginning readers as well.
This book is great for a mountain community, or resort town because it focuses on rescue dogs who find lost skiers. There are no people in this book, it's completely about dogs and a dog's point of view, however children can get the messages of being safe, having fun, making friends, and helping each other.
This book would be good for a preschool class doing a unit on Winter, Winter Sports, Winter Safety, Friendship or Dogs. I love this book, and am saddened by the death of Stephen Huneck. I'm not sure how a person could create such joyful, lighthearted books and commit suicide at the same time. I am thankful that he shared his humor and delight with the world before he was gone. This would be a great gift for any dog lover, as well as preschoolers through third graders, especially those living in a mountain/resort town.
