People tell me I have a short attention span. They mention, on some rare occasions, that I tend to space out easily. That one moment I'll be listening and paying attention and the next moment... Oh sparkly! With that I'm lost! It's amazing how many teachers have been the ones to remind me of my poor ability to pay attention. Remarkable really...

What was I saying?

Oh yeah! So it takes a little bit to capture my attention and to keep it. Usually an abnormal amount of sex, violence or suspense will do the trick. Or if the writing is super-duper fabulous!

(By the way, if only you knew how many times I've gotten distracted and forgotten to keep typing, you'd be surprised! Or maybe not...)

Anyway, point of the matter is that Marr has my number. She knows what people like me are like. It's insidious really. Her nefarious schemes to keep my wavering attention with sex and horror have not gone unnoticed though! I'm onto her! What does she think of her audience? That they'll overlook the TERRIBLE editing job and shaky story-telling with sex?

Okay, so maybe it worked a little... just a little bit. Because every time you start getting bored, some hot guy starts putting the moves on, or his fingers start roaming, or flirting starts happening. That, or you think you're about ready to yawn and some evil person shows up and starts hurting other things.

It took me a little while to get what she was doing. What with the oral sex and the obvious lust inducing moments, it was hard to force my brain into action. I had to keep refocusing, shaking it off and trying to see the book for what it was as opposed to imagining half-naked men with incredible bodies all oiled up and posing...

Okay, never mind, back to the point. In a market flooded with cookie-cutter YA paranormal and Urban Fantasy novels, this one is trying to be different. It's trying to be contrary. Marr must figure that if fails, at least there's lots of pretty to look at.

Well, it did fail to be different. It was entirely forgettable. In fact I'm having trouble remembering everything already and I just finished it today. I suppose of course that if it wants to fall back on pretty sparkly men (oh, I'm sorry, this one GLOWS. It's different, see? At least this one doesn't try to hide the fact that he's a fairy) that's ITS prerogative, however on a hawtness scale of 1 - 10, I rate Keenan and Seth a bit, fat, walloping 'meh'. How could they possible compare to Clayton? Or Barrons, V'Lane or Howl, Christoph, Con or any of the other REAL literary crushes I have!

In fact I've had to create a whole new bookshelf in honour of this book. I'm calling it my 'Meh' Shelf. It's for books like this one (don't be deceived by the stars, it's not really 3, it's 2 1/2) that aren't terrible, aren't fantastic, and that I'll barely remember in a week or so.

So if you want to read some fairly PG schmexing and some interesting Fae mythology then go ahead. Give it a shot.

Maybe if I keep reading books like this, I'll cure my insatiable fascination with sparkly things. It's what got me into this trouble to begin with. I was looking for a diamond in the rough but this book was pretty much mostly rough.

Tatiana So, Kat, how many books are you reading right now?
And I wonder if you are going to be a lover or hater of Wicked Lovely series...

Kat Kennedy Ha! I'm just reading the three. It's not like YOU haven't done that before! I'm curious as well as to whether I'll like or hate this. It's a pretty even mix up of my GR friends. Many seem to love and others seem to hate. I don't know!

Tatiana :) I thought you were not like that though:) I am in fact reading 3 at this time.

It's understandable. I felt a lot of pressure to like it at the the time I read it, because ALL my friends loved this book (same friends who loved City of Bones BTW).

Tatiana You know, Kat, you might be onto something here. That's probably why I didn't like the book - I am not easily distracted by hawtness, etc. If the story is crap, no amount of oral or piercing will make me like it.

Great review, as always:)

AH I have a love/hate relationship with this series. I liked the first book, was annoyed a little with the second or third (can't remember) and disliked the 4th. I too, am easily distracted by shiny things and pretty covers.
By the way, I did like City of Bones, but that's because I read the 3 books and I saw Cassandra Clare at a bookstore. She explained a lot of things and I saw the books in a different light. I was also picturing some cool actors as Valentine.

Kat Kennedy Of course I'm onto something, Tatiana. Naturally, my brilliant, analytical mind has deduced the most logical explanation for what is repeatedly occurring in recent literature.

AH, would you say you were any happier or wiser for reading the rest of the series? Just so I can gauge whether to read the next one.

Don't like COB and I DON'T like CC - but I'm glad that you enjoyed them and got to meet the author!

AH I'm a little OCD when it comes to series. The only series that I can say that I have abandoned was Anita Blake and that was after book 6 (I think I gave her a good chance).

The thing about the WL series is that there are a lot of characters that move in and out of the books. Then in book 4, the yummy ones just disappear or make a cameo. That was annoying. Also in Ink Exchange, I didn't like how the girl thought that getting a tattoo would make her life better from her past (although since I've read that book, I've seen this theme repeated). I also have to remind myself that it is a YA series and I am not really the target audience.

If you have time, read them. If you have more exciting, pressing books to read, read those.

Megan I also gave this one 3 stars but didn't really like it. Well... I loved Marr's fae & mythology, but hated Seth, Keenan and Aislinn.

Tatiana Kat, I've read Ink Exchange at one of my friends' insistence, she promised me I would love it. I didn't and learned not to give writers second chances, especially to those whose writing I don't like. This second book was slightly better IMO, the characters less flat, but the writing drove me nuts. I've noticed that fans of the 1st book tend to find the 3rd book boring and not like the new characters in 4th. So, the bottom like here is I don't think the series significantly improves over time.

Kat Kennedy AH, nobody blames you for giving up on Anita Blake. It was a wise decision.

Yeah, I don't think I'll bother with the rest of the series. I'm just really not emotionally invested enough to give a crap about what happens to these characters.

The UHQ Nasanta Meh shelf. Awesome. Need to create myself one of those. Was interested in reading a romance with a suitor no one can see but...perhaps not? Might give it a try nonetheless. Thanks for letting me know that it's a meh book though.

Kat no! Don't give up on the wicked lovely series! I'll admit, the first wasn't great but the second is better! And the third one IS great! So don't lose hope! Believe in the sparkly faeries!............okay seriously. It does get better, it's like those goddamned houseofnight series. It get's better with each book however, wicked lovely's quality increases much faster. So give them chance.

Theresa Potes I recognize a few names on your list of literary crushes but nor all of them. Can you please share book titles that pertain to said crushes? =) Thanks!
