Good book, but I was so disappointed in the main character and in his children for being spoiled and selfish. You'd think someone that drug himself up from such a low position in life would appreciate his riches more, but he went on to blow his money on ridiculous things and treat others with scorn just as he had been treated. It is horribly sad how he treated his first wife, who was so selfless and practically saved his life over and over again. He would have been nothing without her and he turns around and treats her like dirt. He doesn't appreciate her until she is dying. I couldn't respect him, so it made it difficult to enjoy the book. I was hoping for some redemption and it didn't happen. But, I suppose it was an educational glimpse into what some parts of China may have been like during that time. Quality writing and storytelling. I would hope that in life, people would learn lessons better than this man and his family members.
