I've told you before that Elizabeth Berg is my favorite author. I don't think I could ever read a book by her that disappoints! This novel is about a 59-year-old writer, Helen Ames, who is recently widowed and trying to now fend for herself, and is battling writer's block. Her 27-year-old daughter lives in the same city and Helen depends on her too much and meddles in her life as well. One day Helen discovers her husband was seemingly leading a double life and had withdrawn a huge amount of money from their savings shortly before he died that she knew nothing about. She takes a job teaching a writing course for extra income, and the resposibility plus the interaction with the students helps give her more independence. Then she finds out what her husband needed the money for, and it causes both Helen and her daughter to rethink what really makes a home and a family. I really grew to love Helen and appreciate her quirks. Her love of her daughter was understandable just as her dependence on her husband was. Her thought process when things were going wrong made me laugh. The parts of the book describing her class and what they wrote were also entertaining. The book could have ended a number of ways, but I really liked how it was resolved. Truly a happy ending.

As with all Elizabeth Berg's books, you read the book jacket (or my review!) and it doesn't sound like the story is even about anything. But it magically is about alot!

Jane Thanks, Karen! I'm going to put this on one my list!

Ann This is a perfect review Karen!! I used to read this author regularly and then not. I limit myself to what Overdrive & VA Beach public library offers -- and so I make the best of it. I selected this as an audiobook and while not thrilled have found it light and humorous ..it is good enough
