Call this more like 2.5 stars. The book has its moments, and I liked much of the artwork, but I just couldn't cotton to this comic. The Joker portrayed here owes too much to the movies, IMO; it might as well have been Heath Ledger staggering around the panels, and I guess that's fine and all, but I found it really distracting. I think what bugged me most is that this never felt like a Joker story; I felt like Azzarello could have replaced The Joker with another screwed up crime boss and very little in the story would have changed. It just felt like one of Azzarello's crime stories, but with The Joker and some other Batman villains plugged in.

If you prefer the portrayal of The Joker in Christopher Nolan's film to The Joker in, say, The Killing Joke, you will probably like this. Otherwise, it's dicey.
