First of all let me say that I was lucky enough to win this book on a Goodreads giveaway, but it wasn't just any copy. It was signed and personalized by the author, Abra Ebner, herself. It arrived in my mailbox the day before my birthday, and I couldn't have been more thrilled. It was a perfect birthday present surprise.
I had read some of the other reviews that compared it to Twilight(minus the vampires), so I was definitely curious. I had enjoyed Twilight, but ended up disappointed in the series as a whole. From the haunting cover art which Ebner designed herself, to the beginning pages with Poe's "The Raven" onto the preface I became completely hooked. This was different--special. It all worked for me right away.
I connect with books on different levels, but what I am always searching for is the trifecta: a good, interesting story, characters I can believe in and the author's voice that manages to resonate within me. What I mean by that is getting a feeling about the person as an author, and what their point of view is. I can liken that sort of trifecta to J.K. Rowling, and here with Ebner.
Everything about this novel was genuine for me. I believed that the characters were true to who I thought they were from the beginning. It also had interesting supporting ideas that I thought were out of the box and innovative. It is a story that I will carry with me, and one that made me want to talk about and discuss with others. I thought it was a perfect mixture of heart and intelligence.

Monica I completely agree. I loved this book. It was visual, endearing, and intelligent. I have become an instant fan.
