** spoiler alert ** Updike kills poor Rabbit off at the young age of 56 - but at least he gets to re-live his glory days as a high school basketball star before he kicks off. Nelson the coke addict was still not a very sympathetic figure in this book, although it's gotta be hard having a dad like Harry, who manages to slide through life without much effort on his part, and whom the chicks still dig, even though he's an overweight old guy. It's nice to see Janice finally come into her own a bit. I liked how Updike positioned it as Janice being able to be strong because Harry is weak (physically, at least).
