Norton was never very good with Trickster Tales: she had no sympathy for tricksters, and tended to equate tricksters with evil almost automatically.

That said, it's not clear how much of the attitude of the stories is lifted wholesale from more traditional medieval bestiaries, in which Reynard the Fox was a common character. There's a strong attempt to retain the flavor of the traditional sources, while updating the language and illustrative techniques.
