I'd forgotten how interesting it was to read a Sherlock Holmes novel vs a kid's book take-off or seeing a similar style movie. This is the story that really started them all. It describes how Dr. Watson comes to reside with Holmes and a bit more background on both of them than I'd remembered knowing before.

It's interesting how then entire motives of the perpetrator are provided for the reader so you are given a good perspective and are able to judge clearly at the end and find the end to be as satisfying as possible.
