Paulo Coelho continues his tradition of writing about life’s lessons in the light of mystical and spiritual realms in his recently published book, Brida. Brida, the protagonist, is a woman in her early twenties who is exploring her connection to the world. She encounters Wicca, a mystical woman who becomes her mentor. Wicca tells Brida, “The virgin, the saint, the martyr, and the witch… are the four ways in which a woman can commune with the Universe….” Brida begins to explore how she communes with the world. Her searches bring her to question what Gift she has to offer the world, while simultaneously discovering the true meaning of a Soul Mate. Although Brida deals with similar themes as Coelho’s beloved book “The Alchemist,” it is not as captivating, and at points it seems redundant. However, Coelho’s eloquent writing makes Brida a quick and light-hearted read.
