Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer by John Grisham

While there may be kids who will enjoy reading this trial story I expected more from the reviews I'd read. I debated giving this a three because I do think Grisham did a reasonably good job helping kids better understand how trials work. But in the end I felt there wasn't enough action for this sort of book and an awful lot of telling versus showing. Teddy is a likable hero and maybe Grisham will do better by him in future books.

So, on to my problems.

First of all, Grisham needs to do a bit more research about kids today. I mean, hardly any cell phones? And then be consistent. Early on he writes that Teddy doesn't know a "single thirteen-year-old boy who admitted to having a girlfriend. Just the opposite. They wanted nothing to do with them. And the girls felt the same way. Theo had been warned that things would change, and dramatically, but that seemed unlikely." (7). What the ...? This wasn't true in my day and I'm OLDER than Grisham. Jeez. And then later in the book we learn about the most popular girl in the eighth grade and how cute she was and how she loved to flirt. Teddy goes on to help her and so forth and so on. Oh,and asthma doesn't keep my students from doing sports so Teddy not being able to do them so for that reason doesn't fly either.

I was annoyed, I must admit, by the April storyline. Seemed to disappear for long periods and felt very forced --- just a way to throw a female int the book. The whole thing seemed stiff and awkward.

A few other things I noted with distaste:
The family watching Perry Mason reruns (reruns? reruns?) at 7PM nightly. Huh?
The scary-possibly-bad-guy named Omar Cheepe -- must you use the foreign-sounding-name card in 2010?
That the kid from El Salvador who supposedly is still getting comfortable with English would say things like, "He ventured over in one of the utility carts..."

Whatever. It is getting good reviews elsewhere so who cares what I think?

Suzy SPOILER BELOW

I heartily concur with your review but would have only given it one star. How can you write a legal thriller for kids that ends in a MISTRIAL???

I read a quote from Grisham yesterday that he intends for Theo to be bigger than Harry Potter. Good luck with that, JG

Ariel You know who cares what you think? Me. I do not want to spend my precious acquisition dollars on another celeb writer who thinks writing a children's book is easy money and doesn't bother to learn what children today are like as well as what they need to know. Thank you, Monica!

Augusta Scattergood I also care what you think. I've been very curious about the book and will look forward to hearing what real kid readers do with it...

Michael I assumed Theo and his family had cable and watched Mason that way....LOL

Monica Edinger It sure isn't on my cable anywhere (Time Warner, a biggie).

Clancy Nacht I am so with you. I'm in the middle of it now but the whole 13-year-old boys who didn't admit to having a girlfriend made me wonder what century this story was set in. And I'm halfway through the book and nothing interesting has happened onscreen. Very disappointing.

Cathy I'm the teen librarian and I could not bear to by a book called "kid lawyer" for my teens just because Grisham wrote it. Our children's librarian thought it was too mature for the children's section so she didn't buy it. The adult librarian bought it and I'm sure that the only people checking it out are adults.... oh and look at that. I looked at our holds for this book... AND THERE ARE NONE! Glad I didn't buy it.

Fernanda Martins Hi, I do agree with you. I'm almost finishing it and eventhough I do expect a book for kids/teenagers I'm quite disappointed with the character. He seems too much smart in some things and out of reality in other "normal" things.

Mark Ricketts Wow, unilaterally hit on almost everything that I also didn't like about the book, I completely agree with everything in your review! Very good work, u put my exact thoughts into words

Dayzee I care what you think! This is just what I was talking about in my review on my blog! Glad to know I'm not the only person in the world who wasn't thrilled with this book...

Lee Porteous I really enjoyes the book. It was quite an interesting read although not action packed as people seem to complain about. The issuw with April not being featured is fine with me as this is clearly an introduction for the second book where she takes a more prominent role.

Also as a long time sufferer of asthma I can say or does affect you from doing a lot of sport so I found this perfectly believable although unnecessary as it is feasible for some to just dislike sports without having to have something which stops them doing it.

Overall I enjoyes it. I didnt go into it expecting a complete smashing novel full of up to date references involvong mobile phones, twitter and Facebook etc. This isn't necessary and to me makes it all the better to read.

I apologise of this comment is either badly written/spelt or worded but I am soing it in a phone.

EL.
