really liked it
bookshelves: graphic-novel

Yep, it’s the graphic novel that the movie is based off. A tiny dispatch of 300 soldiers stands up to the gathered millions of the Persian army. If you didn’t know (I didn’t), it’s a fictional retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae. In the book and movie, it’s a testosterone-fuelled face-off between King Leonidas (what an awesome name) of Sparta and the Persian ruler, Xerxes I, who fancies himself a bit of a deity. Muscled men and bloodshed abound. The extra large double-spread pages, skilful line work and Varley’s sweeping colouring make it all the more epic. For honor, glory, and Sparta, etc.! Almost as fun as the movie, and left me wanting to be a Spartan.
