While this has a good concept at its core (a secret society empowering Victorian women w/powerful magic?), it fell somewhat short of being brilliant or even standing out of the crowd. First of all, it needs an editor. I had the audiobook version, so I am not sure which mistakes were the author's and which were the readers, but there were 2-3 times in the novel where I sort did a double take because something in one sentence (content wise) did not match what had been in the previous sentence or page. Second, it was a bit predictable. I guessed the "big surprise" of the novel within the first few chapters. I also agree with other reviews that describe the characters as selfish and unsympathetic. The book wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. I have not decided if I will take the time to continue the series. I might continue just to see if my other guesses about the outcome are accurate.
