The Unwritten Rule

3.5 stars. Sarah's in love with her best friend's boyfriend, Ryan, who seems to like her back, but Sarah is terrified that if anything happens between them (especially before he and Brianna break up), Brianna will hate her forever because of the unwritten rule that you don't go after your best friend's boyfriend.
The story was pretty cute, but it was also a bit slow, as most of the pages were filled with Sarah whining about how she wished things were different and how what she wanted was not the same as what she could have. Although much of this was probably very true-to-life, it did get frustrating to read about. The three main characters (Sarah, Ryan, and Brianna) all kinda irritated me, not because they were flawed (since what character isn't flawed?) but because no one actually took action to get what they wanted or decided to take fate into their own hands. DO something! I wanted to scream more than once. The ending was enjoyable and realistic, which I really appreciated, and this made me like the book a bit more. However, I wish there would have been more character growth throughout the novel; while the situation was different in the end, the characters were essentially the same.
All in all, a decent book, but not one that I'd reread or recommend. I know there are a lot of people who absolutely love this author and think she can do no wrong, and while I'm not quite sure about this bandwagon (considering that I've read like four or five of the author's books and have yet to be blown away by one), I do think that she is talented at bringing characters to life and making the reader care about them.
