Let's be honest: Out of Balliett's series, this is probably the weakest of the three. However, the obvious love that she shows for Alexander Calder's work is like a visual candy bar-- you just want to read more and more about it. As the story follows the kidnapping of Calder (her character, not the artist) and his friends Tommy and Petra as they try to find clues to what happened. Tommy and Petra also have to attempt to get along long enough to ensure that Calder is returned to his family safely. If anything, this has inspired me to visualize a room full of Calder's mobiles. And for that reason alone, I'd recommend this book. A good read for children 9-12, providing they have read the other two books in the series first.
