Add this to the "best first lines" list: "I lost an arm on my last trip home. My left arm". Hey, after that you just have to find out why, and though I personally don't think the explanation made much sense, it doesn't affect my rating of the book.
Interesting twist on time travel/sci fi/historical fiction. Could be compared with "Cross Stitch" (but better written) or "The Time Traveller's Wife" (but the husband isn't the focus). It is quite violent, as you would expect in a book about slavery. Thought provoking, though. How would you cope if you were thrown back into a time in history where your skin colour meant you were suddenly treated so badly?
Thanks to the reading challenge for making me pick up a book I wouldn't otherwise have thought of!
