There's nothing I don't love about Shreve. She has a way of cueing the emotion of each character, teasing me with it, then launching it at me in rapid-fire. Mark of a good climax (in a book!). This is again a novel within a novel, the mini novella within the device Shreve uses to bring Agnes to terms with her own choices. The premise, of course, is one everyone has contemplated. There are so many paths in life but only one can be taken at a time. Begs the question: For those who encounter a recurring path - one they did not take before - is it inevitable that one must choose it?
