Very different follow up to a fascinating debut. In the first book, Hannah Vogel's gimlet eye and shrewd mind had such a diffused range, as she sought information about the death of her beloved cross-dressing brother in the night clubs and back alleys of what was about to become the Third Reich. The compelling historical backdrop of A Trace of Smoke becomes a little overwhelming in this book. The plot is decent enough, and the story of Hitler's elite corps turning on each other should be told. I guess what I found missing here is the depth which with our former crime reporter heroine was sketched in the first installment of this series.
