I've had a bias against this book for years. I think it was my super snobbery eschewing something that became popular. But I now think this book deserves all the praise it received.

First of all, it's funny-- in a twisted and sad way, which is always best.

From there, it's deceptively subtle. The characters, relationships, scenarios will be so familiar to stock American middle class readers, that the deeper stuff seeps into you unawares. It mimics real life in that way. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just end with my first thought upon finishing it. "Damn, that was devastating."
