The Unvanquished
by William Faulkner
by William Faulkner
A fairly quick read, especially for a Faulkner work, the fiction tells the story of Sartoris family and their struggles and endurance through the civil war. Told through the eyes of the youngest son Bayard, the family is an ideal, poor confederate group that must utilize their wit and knowledge of the land to thwart the approaching Yankees. Mixed with an interesting array of characters, including the steadfast Colonel Sartoris and the often hilarious Granny, the novel is compelling enough to warrant a read, but a far cry from the genius Faulkner presents in As I Lay Dying and The Sound and the Fury.
