What's not to like in the concept of a finishing school for vampires, aside from the slightly precious spelling "vampyre"? This book is utterly true to its tone on every page: the kids are realistic, with none of that moronic "I know I shouldn't do this so I'm going to go do it" that drives so many books for younger readers. Well-drawn characterization.

If there are any faults here, it is that the plot is unforgivably rushed. This could have unfolded over 500 or more pages to give the characters time to follow the progression of plot elements; instead, there is a headlong inevitability of events that weakens any sense of justification. I'll be curious to read more in the series to see if they continue to be great characters stuffed into a bare plot outline or whether they slow down and get a sense of pacing.
