For anyone new to Star Trek, anything by Peter David is a "must read." In fact, he often goes back to earlier events in his other books in his New Frontier series and later books. For instance in this book, we have Captain Morgan Korsmo and Commander Shelby.

The Borg have returned and so has a giant planet killer controlled by a woman named Delcara leaving Picard to wonder which one is worse: The Borg assimilating planets or the planet killer eating occupied planets.

There's a small "b" story in this novel. On one of the planets, the crew finds a Borg that has survived. She used to be a human named Reannon Bonaventure who was assimilated 13 years prior. Geordi is determined to get her to reclaim her humanity
