The Man Who Was Thursday
by G.K. Chesterton
by G.K. Chesterton
Strange mixture of Keystone cops and the Anarchist movement. And with bizarre results. The ending is a mishmash of possibilities. But the whole point is probably made in the first couple of chapters with the discussion between the protagonist and his redheaded friend (and his redheaded sister) about poetry as a saviour of civilization. Most of the book is an enjoyable romp, as the protagonist jumps from one member of a "secret" organization of anarchists to another, discovering each of their "secrets" in turn -- each of the seven members is named after a day of the week, and looming over them all is the mysterious "President" Sunday who just may hold the key to the ills of Western Civilization in his hands. Or maybe not.
