2.5 stars? A mixture of science fiction and fantasy involving magic, time travel, and alternate worlds, set in New York City. Reminded me in turn of The Lord of the Rings and A Wizard of Earthsea; and I suppose that if I had read more science fiction I would probably see more similarities to books from that genre.
I didn't find this very gripping or convincing - often things just happened with no lead-up and/or little explanation, and I guess I wanted a deeper story. There were some scary moments, but the stakes rarely felt all that high - things always worked out.
The edition I read is the 20th anniversary edition, and the author's afterword was actually very interesting; I think it made me more interested in the story/characters. This edition also included a short story, "Uptown Local", featuring the same main characters, and I guess giving a nod to Robert Heinlein? Maybe if I had actually read any Robert Heinlein I would have understood what was happening there...
Oh and also, there were some really interesting similarities to Harry Potter - most obviously the use of "he-who-must-not-be-named" for the bad guy. Coincidence? Who knows... The stories are really very different, but it is impossible to read this without drawing comparisons to Harry Potter (though of course this came out long before HP!).
