** spoiler alert ** In my opinion Pride and Prejudice is vastly overrated. Well written yes, but the ending was an incredible cop out. Austen spent the entire book developing two characters so strong willed and stubborn they would never bend or admit wrong, and in the final pages these descriptions came crashing down. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are in some ways very reminiscent of Rhett and Scarlett, however Auseten's ending seemed spineless, the happy ending everyone wanted but would never happen if her characters stayed true to form. By not having Mitchell's backbone, Austen betrayed her own work. In sum, the conclusion of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth becoming suddenly compelled to share their true feelings for each other contradicted the whole of the story, and ruined the book for me.
