I adore the 17th century, am very interested in Germany, midwifery practices, and the religous upheaval of Europe at that time. You would think that I would really like this book. Yet somehow I felt like I had to drag myself to finish it, despite the fact that the author has clearly done her homework and has a good writing style. Perhaps as other readers have stated, it has to do with the alternate sex scenes and really graphic/emotionally troubling torture scenes. Honestly the sex scenes didn't do it for me anyways, and I would have been fine with them left out entirely.
