really liked it
bookshelves: horror, fantasy, science-fiction
Read from May 23 to June 07, 2010

I'd been calling H.P. "America's best bad writer" for years but now as I revisit these stories I have to say that there's more to them than I first walked away with.

I would never write an action/horror story like 'Shadow Over Innsmouth' completely in the past tense narrative, but H.P. makes it work and I think it's because the themes and ideas are so strong that their appeal has long out lived that of his peers.

H.P. was really frightened by man's insignificance in the universe, which doesn't scare me, but with some understanding of his times and upbringing I can appreciate this point of view.
