The first book in the new Vampire Diaries trilogy "The Return:Nightfall" was somewhat different than the original series. This is mostly because the first series, The Vampire Diaries, was written um, what? 20 years ago? The writing style is different. I'm not that shocked by anything about the new series to be honest, nor am I blown away by the writer, LJ Smith's skills. The story is pretty 'out there' and is kind of cheesy and corn ball. The relationship between Elena/Stefan is probably the worst I've ever read (or watched on a tv show) There is no substance to the character of Stefan if you ask me. He is just a flat character. Elena seems to be too unless she is with Damon. Now Damon, is more of a character than anyone in the book. He seems to evolve more than anyone else within the books up until now. Back on the writing style, it is VERY hard to follow even though it is an easy read. I found myself rereading dialogue not knowing who had said what because it wasn't properly explained. Other characters like Matt,Bonnie, and Meredith were more entertaining that Stefan/Elena (in a relationship)and they are secondary characters! Overall, this books is long (586 pages)and not that great. If you are a fan of the show, like myself, and reading the books for fun or to compare stick with the books and read them even though they aren't that great. If you want. I will finish reading just because I'm a fan of the show and don't mind reading them. :P I will say this though. Once you put it down you may find yourself not wanting to pick it back up.
