Sookie is finally back! And in rare form. The events of the previous book have left Sookie a bit...changed. While Sookie deals with a lot of the emotional and physical reprecussions from the nearly lethal events of the last book, more danger still abounds in Bon Temps. Alcide has some new pack members that don't seem exactly friendly to Sookie. Bill is in bad shape from his confrontation with the fairies and only being with one of his blood kin can help him heal. Eric's new boss is a power-hungry schemer bent on killing or disreputizing Eric and his friends. Added to that, Eric's maker is back in town toting around a half-mad youngster. And, there's a nasty little fairy, or two, that still plague the woods around Sookie's house.

While some positive storylines thread this latest chapter in Sookie's tale, the story primarily revolves around the dangers Sookie faces from multiple fronts. This book is not as focused in its storyline as in the previous stories, giving it a sort of mismashed feel. But, one of the things I liked best is the newly evolving Sookie. No longer the incessantly happy-spirited and compulsively positive personality, Sookie is finally developing a wariness and a deadly desire to protect her interests. I suppose this book is more about character development in an attempt to set the stage for greater upcoming stories. Or, at least, I hope. All in all, not the best Sookie story, but still a compulsively good read.
