It can be difficult to review an anthology. In one with so many stories, I could easily forget some earlier ones by the time I get to the end. Also, it can be difficult to weigh the good stories against the poor ones and determine a fair rating for the collection. Therefore, I am going to try giving a brief review and a rating for each story as I finish it. Hopefully, at the end, I'll be able to look back and determine my overall impression. Here goes...
Music Hath Charms - Tanya Huff: I really enjoyed the characters in this story. The brothers were definitely crush-worthy. I also liked how the plot didn't relove around a central couple. The author didn't try to force an entire love story into 40 pages. This could have been a 4-star story. However, Holy rambling sentences Batman! There were several times a sentence would be all or most of a paragraph. This is a personal pet peeve of mine. Final Score: 3 out of 5 stars
Minotaur in Stone - Marjorie M. Liu: TBR
Demon Lover - Cheyenne McCray: If you're looking for steamy sex scenes that live up to the title of the anthology, this story's got 'em. The other aspects of this story don't quite measure up though. The main couple meets, and develops a completely self-sacrificing love before the end. It was hard for me to buy into this. There seemed to be little substance to the relationship outside the bedroom. Also, the scenes from Aedan's point of view felt cheesy. Final Score: 2 out of 5 stars
Equinox - L.A. Banks: Holy rambling sentences Batman! Part II In addition to rambling sentences, the story was frankly boring. It took me two days to finish this story. Also, the female lead felt completely hollow. The male lead wasn't too bad, but he wasn't enough to redeem this story by himself. Final score: 1 out of 5 stars
Ride a Dark Horse - Susan Krinard: I wasn't sure I was going to like this one. The setting is the (modern) American West and the plot involves horses, two things that would not normally appeal to me. However, I found myself enjoying the characters and the story in spite of these elements. The characters had more depth than some of the others so far in the collection. Final score: 4 out of 5 stars.
To Die For - Keri Arthur This story was particularly good. The characters felt realistic and three dimensional to me. Also, this was another one where they author did not try develop an entire relationship and a happily ever after in the short span of 40 pages. Instead the characters had a history, and the story focused on a turning point in their relationship, leaving the future more open-ended. I also liked the plot in this one. It was a haunted house type-story with a vampire twist. Very cool and creepy. Final score: 4 out of 5 stars.
Curse of the Dragon's Tears - Heidi Betts: This was a pretty typical Beauty and the Beast type story. However, those are my favorites. This was very romantic and sexy, with likeable characters even the beast. In this story he is cursed with disfigurement because of his mean behavior. At the point the story occurs, he is at the end of his journey and has learned his lesson and thus is only a beast in appearance. The only negative for this one is that there are many similarities to the Disney B&B movie(youth behaving badly, curse, even a transformation scene). Still thoroughly enjoyed it though. The characters meet and fall in love over the course of a day or so, but this author made it work. These characters had believable reasons why they would feel like the had found "the one" and fall instatly in love. Final Score: 4 out of 5 stars.
