The Greatest Generation

I have only so much tolerance for war stuff, but this down-to-earth collection of stories about WWII veterans was homey enough to keep my attention. It was not so much gruesome stories of wartime, but what these remarkable men and women did with their lives after the war. I loved thinking about how they had missed home and civilian life so much that when they got home they were so determined to finish their educations, marry and start their families and get to work; not in that order, but all at the same time! They held the values of home and family so dear that distraction, divorce and delay were not of interest to them. They just wanted to make up for all that lost time, and they seem to have done so, and in the process, not only made the world a better place with their ideals of family and community service, but at the same time made their fortunes. Many of them were successful not for the pursuit of money, but because of the fact that they just worked hard and loved their country and their lives.
Audio review; a bit chirpy. It's hard to tell how much of this was the writing, but the narrator was definitely of good cheer. If ever there was complaining about the hardships of war, it got left out of this account.
One last thing; this book has been on my to-read list for a long time, but I'm glad I didn't read it until now. Written in 2005, it included glowing profiles of many political figures and large businesses whose fortunes have changed since publication. History is a funny thing.
