Major Pettigrew is in his late 60s, a widower living in an English village and clinging to the old ways of life and the civilized decorum of the past. After his brother dies, he finds that the only person who seems to understand his loss is the woman of Pakistani descent who runs the village's corner shop. Major Pettigrew's Last Stand is a slow-moving story of the courtship between these two people and how they overcome prejudice and deal with the horrible, crass behavior of basically every other character in the novel.
