I had previously read "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" and fell in love with it, so I expected nothing less with "Shanghai Girls". However, I can honestly say I was disappointed. This was an interesting look at a twentieth century Shanghair and Los Angeles Chinatown, as well as what people went through to leave China and end the U.S. legally or otherwise. However, I felt the ending was rushed and not what "should" have happened though I'm not sure what "should" might be. Good to read, but not as good as "Snow Flower" was.
