This is a funny urban fantasy steampunk novel, with romantic elements, an an alternate history Victorian England where vampires, werewolves, and ghosts are an accepted part of society. The protagonist, Alexia Tarabotti, is a "Soulless" who cancels out the supernatural beings' nature by touching them. When she is forced to kill an importunate new vampire with her trusty parasol at a society party (just not done!), she has to partner with the Scottish, brash and handsome local werewolf leader, Lord Conall Maccon, to solve a supernatural mystery. The interactions between the two forceful main characters are entertaining and the story is fast moving and well written.
