A year has passed since Kay's nemesis Carrie Grethen was killed. A year since other tragic events touched Kay's life as well. And now it is time for her to deal with her grief and move forward. As she tries to do so, she realizes how out of touch she had been over the previous year. She and Marino hadn't talked often, and it came as a surprise to her that the new Deputy Chief of the police department -- a woman who thrived on power -- had demoted Marino from detective work and put him back in uniform and back on patrol. Things have also been going amiss at her own office without her realizing it. People's belongings were being stolen, and sabotage was in the works. In the midst of trying to deal with all these issues, a high-profile case, which starts out mostly innocuous, lands in Kay's lap and she finds herself dealing with Interpol in Paris and receiving evidence in a not-so-legal way. But with a killer who calls himself The Werewolf and is rapidly losing control now that he's changed continents, Kay must move fast to find him before anymore women are brutally beaten and murdered.

**This, in my opinion, was one of the more intense Scarpetta novels I have read. I enjoyed it for the most part, and did not want to put it down at the end.
