Another beautifully written work from Tremain. I sat and read some passages aloud just to savour the beauty of the words.

In terms of the story, this involves two sets of siblings, each in their sixties. While there is a mystery at the heart of the novel, the main focus is upon the psychological complexity of the siblings relationships, both of them highly influenced by events in their childhood and youth.

Most of the novel takes place in the Cévenol region of southern France and as I found with 'The Colour', Tremain has a superb ability to evoke a sense of place transporting her readers with ease.
