I probably started this book with unfair expectations. I was secretly hoping for another _We Were the Mulvaneys_. But, alas, _American Appetites_ is nothing of the sort. It was well-written, of course. It was a nice diversion. But (and maybe this was not an accident on the part of JCO) there was no relating to the McCulloughs and their merry band of friends. Even though I work in an environment (much less prestigious, yet) similar to Ian's, in that it's a cloistered world full of self-proclaimed intellectuals. But nope. Not feeling the connection. And not wanting to know people who are so promiscuous and concerned with following their whimsy. It was good. And yet, it was only good.
