Not Quindlen's best effort. This book just dragged. I kept waiting for it to get interesting, but it never did. The only time the book held my interest was when it focused on Skip, the main character's handyman, and the predicament he found himself in. Unfortunately, far too little of the narrative focused on Skip. Also, this book included the PC-approved gay character that the main character, an eighty-year-old society maven, accepts without judgment. That just wouldn't have happened in real life. Quindlen is a good writer. Books like this one make me wonder if the author had a contractual obligation and a deadline to meet.
