One of the great works of science fiction - Frank Herbert set a high mark in terms of creating an entire world and its ecology, then putting humans in that world and exploring how their culture would be shaped by it. The background is a similarly inventive and well thought out exploration of a possible interstellar civilization. In my opinion the sequels don't quite live up to this book, but it stands as a great work on its own without them.
