2009 Rebecca Caudill nominee Excellent book. Moon Blake was raised in the Alabama woods by his survivalist father after his mother died. The dad dies and Moon ends up “in the system.” Moon, however, has been well trained to survive in the wilderness including making his own weapons, shelters, and medicines; finding his own food; dressing animals he’s killed for meat and curing the hides to use for clothing; etc. He, with 2 other boys, elude the system by living in the woods for several weeks. Ultimately he has to question his upbringing, face the system, and go on to live his life. Very much a coming of age story.
