** spoiler alert **
After finishing the seventh book of The Ranger’s Apprentice series, I thought "Will really grows in this series…" 'Erak’s Ransom' by John Flanagan takes the series back in time before the fifth and sixth books. He did this because he forgot to mention a few things that happened during this time. This book is about the time Will graduates from an apprentice to a ranger (rangers are people who can act as spies and gather info for their king, they also can carry out the law themselves when necessary).
The Ranger’s Apprentice series started when Will was only fifteen, now five years have passed and Will has to get ready to live on his own. It was a very memorable moment when Halt (Will’s Teacher) caught Will climbing into a tower. After that Will was apprenticed to the ranger Halt.
Will had very good skills to begin with when he was apprenticed. He was a very agile climber and could blend into the movements of his environment in order to blend in with the background. A ranger’s key skill is to be unseen and Will had already accomplished that to an extent.
Now that Will had trained to master every skill needed to be a ranger, and maybe a bit more, he has to graduate. It was very hard to let go of Halt since Will had grown close to him and the same the other way around, but it happened. Now Will must go and do what he trained five years to do… be a ranger.
