Fucking A, James Baldwin. Why does everything you write come out so fucking brilliantly? Yours is the most impassioned dispassion, the most dispassionate passion. You have an insanely critical eye for everything and everyone. You have this skepticism coupled with a profound self-confidence that manifests itself as confidence in other people even as you maintain critical distance, skeptical hope... brilliant brilliant brilliant... I wish I could maintain the same sort of critical distance from your writing, but I am taken in. Some people might call you moderate, call you bourgeois--you certainly don't go for fanaticism--but how can anyone ignore the potency in your thoughtful weighing of the world? In your ability to reserve a cool right hand to soothe the blow from a fiery left? Should we call that moderate? maybe. maybe. but, for everyone's sake, I hope not.
