I read this because I was going to spend a week in Archer City, Texas, McMurtry's hometown, and then while there I saw the movie, which was shot there. All of that probably added to the sense of how vivid and authentic the book is. And, wow, is there a lot about sex. Essentially it's a book about sex. What impressed me the most about the craft is how casually omniscient it is. McMurtry mostly sticks to a few characters, but anytime he feels like telling you what someone else is thinking, he does, and it's never jarring.
