I think Simon Winder must have had me in mind as his ideal reader - somebody fascinated by Germany who needs a succinct overview of the history of the Germans, somebody who also loves amazing facts, curious individuals, anecdote, humorous and self-deprecating touristic impressions, mind tickling erudition, engaging enthusiasms, hilarious distastes, fresh opinions and just the right amount of powerful moral disgust...I could go on like this forever but I've got to go back and re-read this book and take even more notes.

I think I enjoyed the author's disdain for the balletomanic Louis XIV best of all but, no, maybe I preferred his expressions of gratitude to the mighty J.S.Bach....such a wealth of incident and personalites to choose from.
