Excellent first mystery! This book has been compared to The Alienist, and while I see this, I like the police procedural aspect of it.

Simon Ziele has left New York City proper to move north to Dobson, so live the small town life. A horrible murder is committed there, which brings him back to the city, as it seems the murderer may have come from there. A criminalogist from Columbia University gets involved very quickly, as the murder was done in the manner of one of his research subjects. This novel draws you right into the New York City of 1905, and into the beginnings of research into the criminal mind. There are several good twists before the murder is solved.

Highly recommended, and deserving of the Edgar Award it has already won, and the fall awards it has been nominated for.
