When I picked up books 3 & 4, I'd forgotten that by the time I finished books 1 & 2, I no longer gave a shit what happened to anyone in the books. Oh, look, another gruesome betrayal. Ho hum. Sympathetic character you've been following for two and a half long volumes? Don't get too attached. Jeez. It's like War and Peace. Only with more romanticizing of feudalism.
