While I disagree with Slater on basically everything he mentions in this book about what Americans eat and how (except for pecan pie), it's still a very good collection of thoughts and vignettes. Most American Anglophiles I know should read this to actually gain perspective on British food.

As in, it doesn't always suck, even the old standards.

I am, however, fond of the 60s/70s, and of food history, which is liberally woven into the bits and pieces of Slater's narrative. If you're not, or if you (like I usually do, but I'm willing to make an exception for an interesting read) prefer longer pieces of work, then it may not be for you.
